Extreme weather conditions may affect flights to the airport Keflavik and from it, as well as to some regional airports in Iceland. According to weather forecasts, starting from Friday, January 27, 2023, strong winds and snow are expected.
The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) predicts sleet with poor visibility for the coming days, which can create difficulties on roads, especially in the mountains.
At the same time, heavy rain fell all day in the western and southern parts of Iceland yesterday, and the temperature throughout the country was low.
“Passengers are advised to check the departure time on the Keflavik Airport website and on the official websites of the airlines. It is also recommended to keep an eye on traffic news as well as weather reports and forecasts on the website of the Icelandic meteorological services”, the meteorologists said in a statement.
A similar warning was issued on 31 December 2022 and 1 January 2023 — snow showers were expected in most of Iceland, and heavy snow was incessantly falling on the south coast. In Reykjavik, the temperature dropped to minus 13 degrees.
And a little earlier, on December 20, 52 flights out of 70 scheduled for arrival, as well as 63 outbound flights at the Icelandic Keflavik airport, were canceled due to severe weather conditions in country.
On the same day, the Reykjanesbraut road connecting Keflavik to Reykjavik was closed, making it impossible for many travelers to get to or leave the airport.
Travelers who are due to fly out but will not be able to do this due to canceled flights, are entitled to compensation for accommodation in any hotel of their choice in the amount of up to 150 euros.
Iceland's Keflavik Airport — the largest airport in the country. In October alone, it served 230,529 departures, 227,661 aircraft arrived and 141,670 transfers to transit flights took place.
