Tourists massively poured into Thailand: Thais did not expect such an explosive demand

Tourists poured into Thailand en masse: the Thais did not expect such an explosive demand

For the Songkran holiday, a kind of “Thai new year”, the number of tourists in Thailand may almost return to pre-pandemic levels – and such demand in the country was not expected. This assessment is voiced by the Thai media, stating that after the country canceled the requirement for PCR testing before flying for Covid, the number of tourists arriving at Suvarnabhumi International Airport almost doubled. As a result, Bangkok airport alone takes about 12,000.

“The airport is crowded with foreign travelers, reaching levels close to pre-pandemic,” Thai media said. They also note that “officials and hotel representatives” promptly deliver them for testing. Recall that from April 1, tourists arriving under the Test & Go and Sandbox, do not need to have a negative PCR test, but the need to take this test upon arrival – and then wait at the SHA plus hotel until they receive a negative result remains. Tourists must also complete a self-test on the fifth day and report it through the Thailand Pass app.

“RT-PCR testing time has been reduced and results are available within 4 hours of testing. This could eliminate the need for many travelers to stay overnight in a quarantine hotel, encouraging more tourists to enter the country,” Thai media added. The mandatory stay for travelers entering Thailand under the Sandbox scheme has also been reduced from seven to five days.

Experts also note that all the easing of the rules is timed to coincide with the upcoming high season. Songkran, or the Thai New Year, will be celebrated from April 13 to 15.
