It’s been over a year since Sam completed my blog office, a small shed in the garden just for me and my work.
When you have two kids living in a small house, it can be difficult to find your own space. The boys sometimes come into my office and show me what they’ve found in the garden, and I have to call on my acting skills to pretend to be surprised by different leaves, twigs, and stones. Hmm, that’s quite a task and a boring space for a 1 year old! But for the 30-year-old blogger, it’s anything but boring.
I feel very lucky to love my job so much. That’s why I love being in the office. When I’m at home and not traveling, I spend two mornings a week here.
I get into the house at 7am, turn on the heat, drop my boys off at daycare, and return at 7:45am. At this point, it’s stiflingly hot and smells exactly like a Swedish sauna.
Here’s a strange fact about me. I love the warm and cozy moments when it’s stiflingly hot and stuffy. I love fresh air when I’m outside, but I love the heat when I’m at home. I think it came from my father. My father is the exact opposite; no matter how high the temperature is outside, he opens the doors and windows and turns off the heating when the slightest bit of sunlight comes in. It’s no surprise to me that my dad takes off his jumper before walking through the door!
So I pour myself a giant mug of strong tea and head to the office at 7:45. I know this will keep me going for at least 10 minutes!
You can hear the birds outside even though the door behind you is tightly closed. I really like this. Thanks to our neighbors, we have a lot of birds in our garden. We live next to a river and have lots of trees, but our neighbors have more different bird feeders than I’ve ever known. She is sure that birds come from far and wide for the buffet she serves.
Sometimes their chirps are too loud to be real. She hopes to see the Disney princess through the fence singing to the birds as she combs her hair and the birds bring her flowers. Every time I see a pair of gigantic crow pigeons scurrying around, I awkwardly look away, as if I’ve been peeking into a private moment.
So I’m in my office, the birds are chirping (and snorting) over my giant mug of tea, I turn on my computer, and I feel so relaxed.
This is my happy place.
This is where the magic happens.
This is where I work.
I love mornings at the office. All I do is type notes, edit photos, edit videos, and write about my travels, but this is where I relive every moment of my holiday. It’s also where I spend a lot of time discussing blogging with Elle Croft!
Sometimes it’s just as much fun writing about holidays as enjoying the actual holidays. When you’re apart, there’s always so much going on that you can’t properly appreciate the moment. It’s only in hindsight and reliving that you realize how special it was. And that’s what I do when I’m in the office.
My dog Louis is always with me. He sits on a sheepskin rug as close to the heater as possible and he snores loudly while I work. His snoring is so distracting that I periodically nudge him to make him stop, but I don’t feel like letting him out. Sometimes when I do that, he goes to the big window to my right and sits and stares at me with his biggest, saddest eyes. He didn’t move or even blink for several minutes, but I found his eyes staring at me more distracting than his snoring, so I reluctantly let him back into his room.
Actually, I don’t do much writing at the office.
I write late at night. This is the only time when my mind is calm enough to string the words together and I’m not distracted by emails or social media. I write the old-fashioned way with a notepad and pen, but since I’m typing at my desk in the office, I love that my late night thoughts come to life on screen. And it becomes even more real when you see real people reading them. And real people from all over the world email me and tell me about their lives, their thoughts, their stories, too.
People who see this blog post will email me and tell me about their small office space and share how much they love it. I can’t wait to see these emails.
My blogger office – The details
We purchased my office from Keops Log Cabins. This is from the Lugarde series and you’ll find that it’s very flexible and can do basically anything you want. We saved money because Sam designed the whole thing, Sam assembled everything (it arrived like flat pack furniture), and treated and painted the wood.
The deck Sam built cost a lot of money. Our deck is huge and certainly didn’t need to be this big, but it’s the most amazing outdoor space and makes the cabin feel like an extra room altogether.
In retrospect, I wish I had paid for the cabin to be preserved and painted before delivery. We spent many summer nights painting it (and lots of summer discussions!), but it’s still not properly finished.
The covered outdoor area is my favorite. There is heating, an outdoor wood burner, a nearby BBQ and a TV. Since it’s an old TV, I use FireStick to watch Netflix and use Amazon Music. It is lit with magical little lights and lots of pretty candles.
There aren’t many options for candles. We are next to a river so there are a lot of mozzies and bugs and Sam is like a bug fighting ninja using different products to repel them. Having too many bug repellent candles can make you feel like church, but it’s a great excuse to light one every night and it smells amazing!
This outdoor sofa was a 30th birthday present from my mom and dad (possibly the most grown-up birthday present ever!). The heater you see on the left in the photo below was purchased by him from Amazon for £90. It’s an outdoor heater like you find in pubs so it gets very hot. I also purchased the light from Amazon. I also have these lights around the trees in my garden and they look really pretty.
That’s it! This is my blogger office! What do you think? Do you have a similar space or would you like something like this?
