The tourist tax increase is introduced mainly to control the number of tourists in the city
The Catalonia region is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Spain. The capital city of Barcelona in particular is known for its rich history, stunning architecture, vibrant culture and beautiful beaches. It's safe to say that Barcelona is a place you will never forget once you visit it.
The City of Barcelona recently announced that as of April 1, 2023, the city will increase the tourist tax for for all guests visiting the city.
For those who don't know, many destinations around the world charge regional and citywide taxes, including Barcelona. In Barcelona this rule has been in place since 2012 and there will now be an increase in these taxes.
All visitors will now be required to pay a €2.75 increase in the municipality fee starting April 1st. This increase applies to this year only. From 1 April next year, the fee will be increased to 3.25 euros. It is important to note that the surcharge is only charged for official tourist accommodation (in the main areas).
According to the city administration, this increase in tourist tax is introduced mainly to control the number of tourists in the city and that more importantly, to provide visitors with a quality experience.
Barcelona, like any other popular tourist destinations around the world, suffers from overtourism. This surcharge is an attempt to help the City maintain its infrastructure and improve roads, public transport and escalators.
