The Finnish authorities have announced that they will extend the restrictions at the country's border checkpoints until May 8, 2022. The Russians will have to be guided by the country's anti-covid measures due to the unstable sanitary situation and the ongoing pandemic. The changes will take effect April 11. The corresponding decree of the government of the northern European state of April 7 was published in the local media.
Recall that due to the spasmodic statistics on covid, the Finnish authorities extended restrictions on the external borders of the country several times. So, earlier the government announced that restrictions on external borders would be in effect until April 10. Now that the deadline has passed, officials have once again extended the anti-COVID security measures. The borders of Finland for Russian tourists are still closed, restrictions have been regularly extended for more than two years. Entry is allowed only to family members of citizens who live in the country, and other categories of persons with non-tourist purposes. There is currently only bus service between the two countries and the possibility of crossing the land border by car.
According to the circular, Russians traveling to Finland after April 11 (Monday) must carry medical documents confirming their status as vaccinated or recovered. The measure applies to travelers from third countries, i.e. those outside the European Union and the Schengen area.
“Persons arriving from outside the EU and the Schengen area must present a valid full vaccination certificate or proof of recovery from COVID-19 within the last six months as a prerequisite for entry, with a few exceptions. This requirement applies to those born in or before 2006,” the circular states.
“The Border Guard does not require the above certificates as a precondition for entry from the following groups of persons arriving in Finland from third countries: Finnish citizens, foreign citizens permanently residing in Finland, or persons who have a substantial reason for entry, such as compelling family circumstances or other compelling personal reason,” the document also states.
The same source clarified that entry is allowed without restrictions for arrivals from countries included in the EU green list. By this concept, local officials mean countries and territories “with a good epidemiological situation” in accordance with the recommendation of the Council of the European Union.
In addition, the Finnish Ministry of the Interior has also announced that entry from countries outside the EU and the Schengen area is allowed without restrictions. In order to be allowed to enter a Nordic country without any restrictions, tourists must have one of the following documents:
- Vaccination certificate confirming that the traveler has completed the covid immunization process of any of the vaccines approved by the Finnish authorities. Sputnik V is not approved.
- Certificate of coronary heart disease.
- A negative test result for coronavirus, taken no more than 72 hours ago.
In the absence of these requirements, travelers will be required to undergo a covid test procedure upon arrival in Finland. According to the WHO, a total of 920,692 cases of COVID-19 infection and 3,334 deaths have been registered in Finland since the beginning of the pandemic.
There is currently only bus service between the countries.
